If an editor needs a quick JPG approval preview of your transparent overlay, make it a second file on an explicit background. Keep the PNG for the edit. This recipe was run on an 80 × 40 fixture with ImageMagick 6.9.12-98 Q16 on Linux on October 13, 2026.
Start with a separate delivery folder
Use a copy of your source, and choose destination names that do not exist yet. ImageMagick can overwrite an existing output. The commands below assume you are in that folder and the input is named overlay.png. You can try them with our transparent test PNG before using a production asset.
convert -version
identify overlay.pngThe tested input reports PNG, 80 × 40. If your installation uses ImageMagick 7, check the official instructions for its magick entry point; these exact commands were tested with version 6. Do not infer that a different command name means your asset is broken.
Flatten the preview on white
convert overlay.png -background white -alpha remove -alpha off overlay-preview-white.jpg
identify overlay-preview-white.jpg
convert overlay-preview-white.jpg -format '%[pixel:p{0,0}]' info:Our output was JPG, 80 × 40, and the upper-left pixel was srgb(255,255,255). That pixel was transparent in the source. Inspect your own output in an image viewer too: the corner check alone cannot detect clipped content, wrong colors or poor compression elsewhere.
The order is intentional: set the background, composite away transparency, then disable alpha for the JPG. Omitting the explicit treatment in our control command produced a black upper-left pixel. A filename ending in JPG does not specify your desired preview surface.
Match the size brief without guessing
If the recipient asks for an image that fits within 40 × 40 pixels, a proportional resize works:
convert overlay.png -resize '40x40' overlay-fit.png
identify overlay-fit.pngFor our 2:1 input the result was 40 × 20, not 40 × 40. A brief asking for an exact square is a different requirement. Adding ! forces 40 × 40, but distorts this fixture. Ask whether the recipient expects padding or cropping before choosing either. This recipe does not test a crop or padding operation.
Send files with clear roles
Check that the original still opens with transparent corners. Deliver the source PNG for compositing and the white JPG for approval; do not tell the editor to use the preview as the transparent asset. Include the intended dimensions in the handoff note. If the preview shows unwanted edges or color shifts, inspect the source against the same background and evaluate JPEG quality separately rather than repeatedly changing its extension.
For the observed controls and version limits, see our ImageMagick overlay review. The official option reference documents alpha and background operations.
